Bio-Hybrid Drone Uses Silkworm Moth Antennae to Navigate Using Smell

Conventional drones use visual sensors for navigation. However, environmental conditions like dampness, low light, and dust can hinder their effectiveness, limiting their use in disaster-stricken areas. Researchers from Japan have developed a novel bio-hybrid drone by combining robotic elements with odor-sensing antennae from silkworm moths. Continue reading

The Plane With the Most Dangerous Wing in the World

A Spitfire tears over an English village, skimming over the treetops. Below, an old woman drops her basket in shock. Flight Lieutenant “Geoff” Wellum shouts, “Sorry if I frightened you, my love!”, grinning widely. Nineteen years old. Barely six hours of solo time. And here he is, gripping the controls of a Supermarine Spitfire Mk I. With a top speed of 370 miles per hour, it feels like flying a wild animal. Geoff grins widely. Continue reading

A-10 Warthog Already Has Capability to Use Laser-Guided Rockets to Down Drones

We have just learned that one of the most successful adaptations of an existing weapon in recent memory — morphing laser-guided air-to-ground rockets into counter-drone weapons — can be accommodated on A-10 Warthog. The version of the Advanced Precision Kill Weapons System II (APKWS II) takes 2.75 in. (70mm) Hydra rockets and turns them into drone and cruise missile busters. Continue reading

NTT Demonstrates World’s First Successful Lightning Triggering and Guidance Using a Drone

Lightning is one of the natural phenomena that causes great damage to human society. Although various lightning countermeasures have been implemented for critical infrastructure, including the NTT Group‘s communications facilities, lightning damage has not been eliminated even today, and the damage is estimated to be 100 to 200 billion yen per year in Japan alone (*1).
