This model, called “Dauntless”, is designed to set new records for what multi-rotor UAVs can carry. Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that the nation had extended the range on its drone-carried jammers to 100 km, or over 60 miles. Drones as a platform for, and not just the target of, electronic warfare means that the sight of a flying robot overhead could signal incoming strikes as well as a sudden inability to call for help.
Drone operators struggling to fly the multi-propeller device and take pictures simultaneously could soon have a much simpler method to steering flight. Bedrich Benes, a professor of computer graphics technology, and doctoral student Hao Kang at Purdue University collaborated with corporate researchers to develop a touch-screen method to navigate and take pictures with drones.
