Japan’s Terra Drone Enters Defence Equipment Market

Terra Drone Corporation, a Japan-based drone and Urban Air Mobility (UAM) technology company, has announced its full-scale entry into the defence equipment market. As part of this expansion, the company will establish Terra Defense, a U.S.-based subsidiary by the end of fiscal year 2026 to support an optimized global supply and logistics network for defence assets.

Since its founding, Terra Drone has focused on transforming aerial mobility, building a strong global presence through the development and deployment of drone technologies across multiple industries. This has enabled the company to accumulate extensive operational expertise in real-world drone applications.

Amid growing geopolitical instability, the role of advanced technology in safeguarding national security has become increasingly critical. Terra Drone aims to leverage its technical capabilities and field experience to support the development of next-generation defence systems that are rapid to deploy, cost-efficient, and highly capable.

The global security landscape is undergoing significant change, with rising tensions in regions such as the Middle East and Indo-Pacific. Defence spending reached a record USD 2.71 trillion in 2024, reflecting the urgency of responding to emerging threats. Recent conflicts, particularly the Russia-Ukraine war, have demonstrated the strategic importance of low-cost unmanned systems, which reduce risks to human life while enabling scalable operations.

As a result, investment in unmanned defence technologies is accelerating worldwide. The global military drone market is projected to grow from USD 15.8 billion in 2025 to USD 22.8 billion by 2030, highlighting strong demand for such systems.

Japan’s security environment is also becoming more complex, with increasing regional military activity and evolving threats such as missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. In response, Japan’s proposed fiscal 2026 budget allocates approximately USD 1.96 billion toward strengthening unmanned defence capabilities. Initiatives such as the “SHIELD” concept—focused on multilayered coastal defence—underscore the growing importance of drones and sensor-based systems.

Against this backdrop, Terra Drone sees significant long-term growth potential in the defence sector. The company plans to focus on three strategic areas.

First, the establishment of Terra Defense in the United States will enable more agile and compliant international operations, particularly in logistics, import/export, and technology collaboration.

Second, Terra Drone will pursue phased global expansion, targeting key markets including Japan, the United States, NATO countries, Ukraine, and parts of Asia and the Middle East. These regions present strong demand for unmanned systems, driven by evolving security needs and increased defence investment.

Third, the company will expand its portfolio of next-generation unmanned assets across land, air, and sea. This includes FPV drones, interceptor drones (rocket-type, fixed-wing, and jet-powered), reconnaissance drones, and unmanned surface vessels. These systems are designed to address a wide range of defence applications, from low-altitude threat response to wide-area surveillance and coastal security.

CEO Toru Tokushige stated that advancements in drone technology are fundamentally reshaping defence and security. He emphasized that Terra Drone’s market entry represents a key step in its long-term strategy, with a focus on delivering practical, adaptable solutions tailored to national defence needs while contributing to global security and deterrence.
