Ukraine’s FPV Ambush Drones Now Lurk On Power Lines

Ukrainian developers have literally taken ambush drones to another level, with a new model that hangs from power lines while waiting for targets.

Existing ambush drones land on the ground and have a limited field of view. The new perching drone can spot targets further away and will be harder to counter. It has already been deployed and used in action. What we do not know yet is whether the drone only perches on the line, or whether it can actively draw power to extend its waiting time.

Evolution Of Ambush

Both sides have employed ambush drones since at least 2024. Unlike standard FPVs they have landing legs and perch on a road, rooftop or other flat surface with engines turned off. Power consumption is minimal, so an ambush drone, known as Zhdun (“Waiter”), can wait for several hours.

Already in use, it’s yet unknown if they can draw power from the lines for extended operation. Both sides employ ambush drones, which wait silently before striking targets at close range. This advancement, fostered by Ukraine’s “E-points” system rewarding military innovation, represents a dangerous evolution in drone warfare, poised to become a prevalent feature in urban combat scenarios.
