DARPA Lift Challenge Now Accepting Applications

The DARPA Lift Challenge is now accepting applications, calling on the nation’s brightest innovators—from university labs and garage workshops to small businesses, large corporations, and military services—to secure a place in aviation history.

This $6.5 million prize competition seeks breakthrough designs that solve one of vertical heavy-lift aviation’s toughest problems: payload-to-weight ratio. Success could bring competitors national visibility and a lasting legacy as pioneers in drone technology.

Today’s multirotor drones are constrained by low payload-to-weight ratios, often around 1:1 or less. As payload requirements grow, drones quickly become larger, more complex, and prohibitively expensive. The Lift Challenge aims to break this barrier. Teams must design a drone weighing 55 pounds or less that achieves the highest possible payload-to-weight ratio while completing a demanding competition course.

“This improvement would redefine vertical lift aviation, unlocking new possibilities for military and civilian applications,” said DARPA Lift Challenge Program Manager Phillip “Donna” Smith. “Our goal is to dramatically increase useful load and drive down the cost per pound of transported cargo. If you’ve got the vision, now’s the time to prove it.”

How to Apply

One U.S. person or U.S.-registered entity must submit the application and serve as the official team representative. Teams may include any number of members, including international participants not restricted under ITAR, though only 10 members may attend the competition. Government and military organizations may participate if the design has not previously received government funding, and all participants must have employer permission if using work hours or resources.

Applications are simple: team name, representative contact information, and an optional logo.

Apply Early

Applications are accepted through May 1, but early applicants receive priority in selecting preferred flight days.

Connect with Industry

The Lift Challenge Contributor Portal connects competitors with U.S.-based companies offering funding, equipment, services, and mentorship. Participation is optional but encouraged.

“The Lift Challenge isn’t just a prize—it’s a catalyst for long-term growth in the American drone industry,” said Smith.
