Turkish UGV Test-Fires Kamikaze Drones

Turkey’s Havelsan Barkan 2 UGV demonstrated launching reconnaissance, surveillance, and kamikaze munitions on October 12.

The first successful launch with BARKAN took place on January 8, 2023, and ROKETSAN’s guided mini missile Mete was fired from a land vehicle for the first time with BARKAN 1.

On this occasion, HAVELSAN successfully fired kamikaze ammunition from BARKAN 2 for the first time on October 12, 2023, and this shot became the first in its class for BARKAN.

BARKAN While carrying out tasks and activities in an area with a radius of 2 to 15 kilometers, the shooting of Gürbağ Defense’s reconnaissance, surveillance and kamikaze ammunition from a system with two launchers connected to a single tower that can be fired simultaneously (one launcher is a laser guided system, one launcher is a wandering ammunition). was carried out successfully.

Firing this type of ammunition and multiple launchers from a single tower via UAV is considered a first in the international arena. The fired kamikaze ammunition can reach a range of 15 kilometers with an electric propulsion system, a flight altitude of 3000 meters, and an airtime of 40 minutes.

BARKAN, which entered the Turkish Armed Forces inventory in recent months, can quickly integrate different payloads thanks to its modular structure. Barkan 2 was developed to integrate weapon systems with higher deterrence. In order to increase maneuverability in the field, HAVELSAN came together with Gürbağ Defense and successfully completed this integration activity.

HAVELSAN Product Development and Production Director Veysel ATAOĞLU stated that the KSOM (Mixed Swarm Operations Center) activities, which were recently carried out in the field, continue with the use of different types of payloads and said,

“With the addition of these systems to KSOM, the concept of using the circulating ammunition as a swarm will also be realized in the field.” “As HAVELSAN, we continue our work intensively without deviating from our main mission of turning these platforms into intelligent robots by using software capabilities on more platforms and payloads,” he said.

Stating that different types of concepts will be created in which all systems can work together by including the products of different companies in the platforms where they provide autonomous and swarm capabilities, Ataoğlu said,

“All these unmanned systems, including swarm concepts, especially the Digital Unity Technology introduced and pioneered by HAVELSAN, will provide security “We are focused on the battlefield concept of the future, which is to use our forces as a leading force, which will ease their hands in the field.” he said.
