Russia’s ZALA AERO Tests LIDAR on UAS

ZALA AERO successfully tested BVS complex using airborne laser scanning technology (LIDAR). Target load of the aircraft – the modern laser scanner from leading manufacturers. This is the first domestic unmanned system using a laser scanner.

The technology consists in determining the coordinates of the plurality of surface points (including – relief under trees) by a laser scanner installed on board the unmanned aircraft. The measurement accuracy provided GNSS Positioning System (survey-grade accuracy) and inertial navigation system.

The unique feature of ZALA AERO unmanned system for an air scan is unsurpassed precision measurement of dimensions of objects – up to 1 cm in horizontal and vertical.

To date, in addition to laser scanning, no other remote sensing method allows both the visible surface of the earth (eg, plants, power lines) and the true surface topography. In addition, laser scanning allows to solve problems at night and in conditions of low visibility.

These airborne laser scanning is used to create three-dimensional terrain models, orthophoto, virtual models of cities, allows control of the engineering work, determine the level of sagging wires for monitoring power lines, examine the state of the railways and other infrastructure.
