Mike C from Zurich and his girlfriend have successfully created a fully functional chocolate quadcopter.The quadcopter has a frame made out of chocolate and the battery, motors and controllers were mounted on top of a different material to keep the chocolate from melting as long as possible.
Mike C’s girlfriend, who loves baking and chocolate, came up with the idea of building a copter made out of chocolate. Mike C, who describes himself as someone who loves building and flying quadcopters, wrote that he was skeptical at first because chocolate isn’t as stable as aluminum or carbon, materials typically used in making the frames for copters. He was also hesitant because chocolate melts and the battery, motors and controllers of a drone tend to heat up during flight.
Mike C and his girlfriend created a silicon mold of the quadcopter frame from a wooden prototype. They mounted the motors and the flight controller on extended steel spacers, and the battery and electronic speed controllers on styrofoam spacers. The spacers prevented the parts from having direct contact with the chocolate to keep the chocolate from heating up and melting too quickly.
They melted 1000 grams of dark chocolate and 100 grams of white chocolate and poured them into the frame mold. The chocolate-filled mold was left inside the fridge for a few hours to harden. Once the chocolate was hard enough, the creators put the final touches to the chocolate copter and took it out for its maiden flight.
The chocolate copter flew without any issues and when it landed back to the ground they were able to take a bite out of it.
Though the project seems like just a fun gimmick, it definitely shows off a new way to build quadcopters without the need to cut, drill, or mill anything.
