As drones become a more common sight overhead, the government has started to think more and more about how to protect the skies. At CES 2017, the Federal Aviation Administration revealed that it is researching new ways to detect and defend against drones.
Industry body Oil & Gas UK has created a fresh publication to give the industry guidance on the growing use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) offshore.
A significant number of countries in the European Union (EU), as well as in countries outside the EU, currently do not have a structure uniting the principal entities [governmental (regulatory & non-regulatory) & industrial (including micro, small & medium-sized companies)] that are part of its national drone community. In most countries, the various stakeholder groups have no formal transversal communication between them and operate in isolation from each other. No national drone association has succeeded in creating a truly federated national approach.
Rules & Regulations
With an ever-increasing number of States bringing out operational rules or regulations, the non-military remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) market is growing substantially. This is very clearly the case in Europe, where the following 24 European Union (EU) countries now have an RPAS regulation in place, or where a regulation is about to be published: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, UK. The RPAS UPD project aims to utilise RPAS technology to provide a high-performing unmanned delivery solution for customers in remote locations. On track for completion within 36 months, the project incorporates a technical and commercial feasibility study into the use of remotely piloted systems in parcel delivery, culminating in the eventual demonstration and operation of a live UPD service to customers in hard-to-reach locations. Sergeant Russ Mullins knows it’s only a matter of time before people start unpacking the drones they received for Christmas and start launching them over the water. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife agent just wants to keep the remote-controlled aircraft away from Washington’s endangered population of orcas, also known as Southern resident killer whales.
The Korean Agency for Technology & Standards (KATS) of the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy said that it announced the world’s first national standard on drones on December 30. Continue reading
