After soaring the skies of Afghanistan in missions totalling more than three years, Australia’s Heron surveillance drones and their operators are heading home.The Heron unarmed remotely piloted aircraft completed more than 27,000 mission hours since starting operations in August 2009.
Uzbekistan has banned the import, sale and use of pilotless drone aircraft, citing air safety and security concerns. Media reports in the tightly controlled Central Asian nation say that Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyaev signed an order on December 1 and that the ban comes into force on January 1, 2015. Italian police agreed to start using drones as a way of monitoring major events and responding to natural disasters, while national media said they could also be used during protests. In a deal with the Air Force, the unmanned planes will be rolled out for “research missions” during the day and night in Italy, the Air Force said in a statement. Continue reading
