Anduril Gets $17M US Army Contract for New Ghost-X Drones with ISR Sensors

On April 7, 2026, the U.S. Army awarded Anduril Industries a $16.8 million firm-fixed-price contract to deliver Ghost-X drones equipped with Trillium HD45LP sensors. The award stands out for specifying both platform and payload, signaling a clear shift toward fully integrated, mission-ready intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) systems.

Rather than procuring a generic small drone, the Army is prioritizing a complete ISR package: a vertical takeoff aircraft paired with a lightweight, stabilized day-and-night sensor. This reflects evolving battlefield demands, where dispersed operations, electronic warfare, and the need for persistent local reconnaissance require compact yet capable systems deployed directly at the tactical edge.

Ghost-X occupies a middle ground between short-endurance quadcopters and larger tactical UAVs. Designed for expeditionary use, it features a tandem-rotor configuration, modular payload options, and improved lift capacity. With an upgraded propulsion system and dual-battery setup, it can reach up to 75 minutes of endurance and carry payloads of up to 25 kg, enabling more than basic surveillance missions.

The Trillium HD45LP enhances these capabilities. As a lightweight electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) gimbal, it provides stabilized imaging, thermal sensing, continuous pan, onboard tracking, and geolocation. Its low weight preserves flight endurance while delivering high-quality intelligence in both day and night conditions.

Together, this configuration enables extended surveillance, route monitoring, and persistent observation of key terrain without relying on larger, higher-level ISR assets. For frontline units, it significantly improves situational awareness and shortens the sensor-to-decision cycle.

The contract also reflects broader Army trends. Anduril Industries previously announced Ghost-X’s selection for a company-level small UAS requirement, reinforcing its role in supporting maneuver units. The fact that only one bid was received suggests a highly specific requirement tailored to this integrated capability.

Ultimately, the award highlights growing emphasis on compact, persistent, and tactically resilient ISR systems for modern warfare.
