Babcock and Frankenburg Technologies Sign MOU to Explore New Affordable Air Defence Capability

Babcock has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Frankenburg Technologies to explore the development of a new and affordable air defence system in response to the increase of one-way attack drones.

Under the agreement, the two organisations will collaborate on the development of a cost-effective, containerised launch platform for Frankenburg’s new low-cost missiles. Designed specifically to counter one-way attack drones and manufactured at pace, the system aims to provide a scalable and kinetic defence solution suited to modern operational demands.

The proposed capability is intended to help protect military personnel and critical national infrastructure that may be exposed to attack across Europe. By focusing on affordability, speed and scalability, the collaboration addresses the evolving nature of drone warfare and the need for mass-ready air defence solutions.

With Frankenburg’s engineering function led from the UK, the partnership also supports the development of a new sovereign capability. It is expected to create skilled employment opportunities in the UK and generate global export potential for both companies.

David Lockwood, CEO of Babcock, said:

“Defence has entered a new era with the rapid evolution of drone warfare, and industry must respond to this growing threat. We work closely with innovative start-ups tackling defence’s most critical challenges, and we are pleased to be partnering with Frankenburg Technologies to develop an advanced maritime counter-drone air defence capability.”

Kusti Salm, CEO of Frankenburg Technologies, said:

“Frankenburg Technologies’ mission is to bring affordability and scale to modern air defence. The drone threat has fundamentally changed the character of warfare, requiring every layer of defence to be designed for mass and speed from the outset. Partnering with Babcock, a recognised leader in maritime defence, allows us to combine rapid innovation with proven naval and industrial expertise, accelerating the delivery of an operational maritime capability.”
