China Showcases World’s First Catapult-Capable Drone Carrier and UCAV Launch

A GJ-21 stealthy flying-wing unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) has successfully launched from and recovered aboard the Type 076 amphibious assault ship Sichuan, according to China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

Visual confirmation of this milestone has yet to emerge, but there have been steady signs of preparations for flight trials from the Sichuan, which features an electromagnetic catapult. GJ-21s have already been spotted flying from airfields on land.

Assault Ship Equipped with an Electromagnetic Catapult

The Type 076 is being presented as the world’s first amphibious assault ship equipped with an electromagnetic catapult system and arresting technology capable of supporting fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).The successful demonstration represents more than an advancement in drone technology. It signals China’s expanding efforts to reshape the operational role of amphibious assault ships and strengthen the integration of unmanned platforms into its naval strategy.

Unlike conventional amphibious assault ships that primarily focus on transporting troops, helicopters and amphibious equipment, the vessel incorporates technologies that enable the launch and recovery of large fixed-wing drones.

Carrier-Based Drone Operations

The ship’s electromagnetic catapult technology provides the possibility of launching heavier fixed-wing aircraft that would otherwise face significant limitations when operating from conventional amphibious assault ships.

China’s advancement in carrier-based drone operations is likely to attract considerable attention from regional and global military planners, particularly in the strategically important Indo-Pacific region.

The operational effectiveness of the GJ-21 will depend on several factors, including its endurance, reliability, communications systems, maintenance requirements and ability to conduct repeated operations in challenging maritime conditions.

Vessels like Sichuan are primarily designed to support amphibious operations, transport military personnel, deploy helicopters and facilitate landing operations. However, the integration of electromagnetic catapult technology and fixed-wing unmanned aircraft could transform them into versatile platforms for maritime surveillance, reconnaissance and strike missions.

The Sichuan could therefore serve as an independent drone carrier while also contributing to wider naval operations alongside China’s conventional aircraft carriers.
