Northrop Grumman is advancing the future of autonomous air combat with the YFQ-48A Talon Blue, the U.S. Air Force–designated variant within its company-funded Project Talon portfolio. The YFQ-48A reflects a focused partnership with the Air Force to rapidly deliver an autonomous wingman capable of supporting manned fighters in contested environments.
This milestone underscores Northrop Grumman’s commitment to innovating with speed and investing ahead of demand, delivering mission-ready autonomy from day one.
YFQ-48A Talon Blue
Talon Blue is part of Project Talon, a portfolio of modular, cost-effective and rapidly deployable aircraft designed to meet evolving autonomy needs. Alongside hardware development, the portfolio emphasizes advanced software capabilities, enabling industry partners to develop future solutions through access to Northrop Grumman’s autonomous testbeds.
The aircraft’s designation within the Air Force’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft program highlights the alignment between Northrop Grumman’s manufacturing agility and the service’s acquisition priorities for low-cost, advanced technologies. Its design leverages modular manufacturing techniques that reduce part count and overall weight, accelerating production timelines without compromising mission capability.
Constructed with composite materials, the YFQ-48A features a 50% reduction in parts and is 1,000 pounds lighter than previous designs. These efficiencies enable rapid assembly and the delivery of affordable mass at scale.
“We continue to push the boundaries of mission-ready autonomy with our Project Talon portfolio,” said Tom Jones, corporate vice president and president of Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems. “By anticipating mission needs, investing ahead of demand, and building the digital backbone and manufacturing capacity to move quickly, we deliver aircraft that are not just autonomous — they are mission capable on day one.”
Talon IQ
Talon IQ, also within Project Talon, is Northrop Grumman’s next-generation autonomous testbed ecosystem. Operating on the Scaled Composites Model 437 aircraft, it enables partners to develop and refine software using trusted autonomy hardware and proven integration expertise.
Drawing on prior experience and close collaboration with customers and industry, Northrop Grumman continues to deliver scalable, affordable autonomous solutions — advancing both hardware and software to meet the evolving demands of future warfighters.
