France Buys Long-Range Kamikaze Drones from MBDA and Aviation Design

France’s procurement agency, the Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA), and MBDA have signed a landmark contract for the development and production of the ONE WAY EFFECTOR (OWE), a sovereign long-range capability designed to saturate enemy defences.

This strategic agreement underscores MBDA’s ability to accelerate innovation and adapt rapidly to operational needs. It strengthens the Group’s portfolio while remaining closely aligned with evolving armed forces requirements, and contributes directly to reinforcing both national and European sovereignty.

A Robust and Cost-Effective Solution for Contested Environments

Unveiled at the 2025 Paris Air Show in June, the ONE WAY EFFECTOR illustrates MBDA’s response to increasingly complex and contested battlefields. It delivers a carefully balanced solution, combining mass and performance at a controlled cost. Designed to be robust and affordable, the OWE provides armed forces with a decisive operational advantage in high-intensity conflict scenarios.

Developed in partnership with Aviation Design and key industrial players, the ONE WAY EFFECTOR is set to transform battlefield dynamics. Its innovative industrial organisation enables scalable production, fully aligned with the demands of modern warfare and sustained operations.

The programme’s pace has been unprecedented: less than one year elapsed between the project’s announcement, the first test firing, and the signing of the initial contract. This rapid timeline was made possible in particular by the DGA’s innovative “Defence Drone Pact,” which promotes a cooperative, agile approach between the armed forces and industry.

The swift development of the ONE WAY EFFECTOR reflects MBDA’s collective commitment and innovative spirit, demonstrating its ability to respond quickly to emerging military needs in line with evolving conflict doctrines.
