UAS Challenge 2020 Final Event to be Virtual

The UK Institution of Mechanical Engineers UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) Challenge final event will be hosted virtually on 19 June 2020. Amid the current challenging environment presented by COVID-19 pandemic, the UAS Challenge ‘fly off’ event in June was cancelled to ensure the safety of teams, IMechE members, volunteers, and employees.

To recognise teamwork done to date, the UAS Challenge organising committee has agreed to host a virtual awards ceremony and present teams with the following awards:

  • Design
  • Highest Placed New Entrant
  • Innovation
  • Safety
  • Business Proposition
  • Social Media.

The prizes will be awarded based on a combination of the aggregate scores of team submissions:

  • Concept Paper
  • Preliminary Design Review
  • Critical Design Review.

Other contributing factors will include the innovation and safety cases of team’s UAS.

The Social Media prize will be awarded to the team which has engaged most effectively with local media, schools, and social media to promote participation and engagement with the Challenge.

The Business Proposition award will be judged on successful delivery of a pre-recorded Dragon’s Den presentation and A0 digital poster. Teams are expected to prove their understanding of the market, good alignment of the UAS capabilities and cost projections with the target market.

The pre-recorded videos and digital poster will be submitted via a new digital platform provided by our sponsor Mashoom.

Jamie Robinson, Mashoom Founder says,

“As a mechanical engineering student, I originally developed Mashoom as a CAD management system for the challenge teams at my university, including the UAS Challenge. Our teams utilised the software as a general document storage and sharing solution.

“These products were designed to work at scale which provides simple access rights management to a large number of users, including schedule changes to create submission deadlines. Mashoom also allows a consistent brand presence to be maintained. It applies customised branding from the login page through to the automated emails.”

A panel of judges and sponsors from GKN Aerospace, Meggitt, Leonardo and  Bombardier will review Team’s Dragon’s Den presentations and contact participants with any follow up questions.
