Chula Vista Police Releases Drone Video of Incident

Chula Vista Police released video recently showing its drone program in action during an alleged domestic violence encounter.

The incident happened the afternoon of Feb. 12 in the 400 block of Park Way.

A caller told police a person was driving back and forth in front of a motorcycle, possibly trying to hit it with his or her car, according to officers.

chula vista policeThe Chula Vista Police Department’s Unmanned Aerial Systems Team launched a drone controlled by an officer located in the police station to assist officers on the scene.

The drone pilot watched as the driver in a white sedan used the car to block the path of the motorcycle, which spend over sidewalks to get away, police said. The sedan driver repeatedly tried to ram the motorcycle, eventually knocking the rider off the bike in an alley, according to officers.

Police arrested the driver of the sedan, Carmen Alcoser, on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. The motorcycle rider, Roberto de los Rios, was arrested on suspicion of riding a stolen motorcycle.

Chula Vista Police said the department’s drone program has contributed to 59 arrests since it started five months ago.

“We have demonstrated proof of concept that a drone can be dispatched in support of patrol officers to enhance the safety of an officer and the safety of the public,” said Police Chief Roxana Kennedy.
