UK Airprox Board Reports 30% Rise in Drone Incidents

The UK Airprox Board, sponsored jointly, and funded equally, by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the UK Military Aviation Authority (MAA)., issues monthly statistics of near misses (Airprox) incidents in the UK.  The latest figures published for 2018 show a continued rise of incidents involving drones and civil aircraft.

There were 120 near misses between drones and aircraft reported in the year to December 4 2018, up 29% on the total of 93 in the whole of 2017.

Details of 19 near misses between aircraft and drones during the period August – October 2018 are available here.

Several of the incidents investigated by the UK Airprox Board (UKAB) involved airliners which were approaching Heathrow.

  1. Question.
    1) how many drones are registered during each year?
    2) how many drone flights were there?
    3) how many were commercial drones verses recreational drone?
    4) so, based on the above questions did it really go up?

Story seems very misleading with only looking at one narrow piece of information.

    1. Alex,

All good questions, but the story was simply a report of the Airprox Board’s findings and doesn’t pretend to be an exhaustive investigation of the topic…..
