Connecticut Restaurant Tests UAS Delivery of Chicken Wings

A Milford restaurant has experimented a different kind of way to receive food, rather than picking up or eating it. The Tilted Kilt in Milford recently tested out delivering chicken wings by drone, and they said the experiment was a success.“Our whole idea and concept of the Tilted Kilt is to have our patrons come in and dine with us and get the whole experiment,” said Sara Vause of the Tilted Kilt, who added that she was amazed after the drone experiment.

The idea for this experiment was created by Kyle Reyes, the marketing partner for Tilted Kilt.

“It traveled a few hundred yards. It spent above 25 minutes up in the air,” said Reyes.

In a video the restaurant shot of the experiment, the wings go from the kitchen, to the bar where the drone is waiting. The drone is then taken outside and then it takes off for delivery.

“It stayed on private property the entire time. It wasn’t commercial use. There was no money that exchanged hands,” Reyes added.

Right now it is not illegal to use a drone, but the Federal Aviation Administration, which regulates what flies in the sky, said using drones for commercial purposes like food delivery where money is exchanged is illegal.

“You need to maintain line of sight at all times, and not relay on the monitor for your position,” said Joe Papa of Multirotor pilot magazine.

Papa has a drone, or “Quad Chopper,” and while he said deliveries won’t be happening by air anytime soon, they could happen one day.

“They’re (drones) not going away, it’s just a matter of implementing some guidelines to make sure that it’s safe for everybody,” Papa added.
