Reaper Crashes into Lake Ontario

According to the Air National Guard, an MQ-9 Reaper crashed into Lake Ontario early Tuesday afternoon. No one was injured during the incident.The Air National Guard says there were no weapons on the aircraft. The aircraft had taken off from Wheeler Sack Army Airfield at Fort Drum and was operating in approved airspace over the eastern side of the lake when it was lost at about 1 p.m. Tuesday

The 174th Attack Wing will hold a press conference at its Molloy Road facility to discuss the incident at 6 p.m.

The military says the craft was operating in approved military airspace when the crash occurred.

The unmanned aircraft are also cleared to fly over multiple counties in Central New York, including Onondaga, Oswego, and Madison counties during training exercises.

It was being used as part of the 174th’s mission of training MQ-9 pilots and sensor operators for the Air Force.
