European Commission UAS Panel’s 5th Workshop – Research & Development

The fifth and final workshop in the five-part series of European Commission UAS Panel Workshops run jointly by the European Commission’s DG Mobility & Transport (MOVE) and DG Enterprise (ENTR) on the topic of insertion of UAS into European controlled airspace, will take place at the Royal Military Academy, 8 rue Hobbema, BE-1000 Brussels, Belgium on 9 February 2012.

The “chef-de-file” of this workshop will be Ms Claude-France Arnould, chief executive of the European Defence Agency. The moderator of this workshop will be Christian Bréant, R&T director at the European Defence Agency.

This workshop will address “UAS Research & Development” aspects, in particular the technology gaps at a European level are to be filled in order to remove obstacles to the development of the UAS sector in Europe, in order to allow it to meet its full potential.

Registration will start at 09.00. The workshop will start 09.30 and conclude at 17.30. After a welcome speech by Daniel Calleja Crespo (EC DG MOVE) and Matthew Baldwin (EC DG MOVE), Alfredo Roma (ESPI) will present the conclusions of the 4th Workshop, and Claude-France Arnould will highlight the objectives of the 5th Workshop. The 4 workshop sessions will cover the following topics:

  1. Setting the scene on AUS applications in the near future & corresponding research needs
  2. Ongoing R&D activities linked to UAS technologies in Europe
  3. Technology gaps
  4. Future UAS-related R&D: Towards a coordinated approach

The overall objective of the workshops is to gather information on how to remove technology-related obstacles to the use of UAS in Europe.

The work at the 5th workshop will take due account of the conclusions and recommendations of the earlier four EC UAS Panel workshops. Based on the conclusions of this workshop, and the previous ones, the European Commission, EUROCONTROL, EASA, ECAC, European Defence Agency (EDA), European Space Policy Institute (ESPI), FRONTEX, UVS International, UK Border Surveillance, industry experts, potential users and other interested stakeholders will work together on preparing for the safe use of UAS in non-segregated European airspace.
