U.S. Geological Survey Office Introduces UAS to Count Wildlife

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) biologist Leanne Hanson narrates this video showing how the Raven-A small unmanned aircraft system works in the field and what it “sees” from the air.

In the first application of the Raven A system to a natural resource management need, the USGS and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) are testing the Raven A to see if it will be an effective means of conducting aerial counts of wildlife, in the current case migrating sandhill cranes. This video gives an idea of how the Raven-A system could be applied in natural resources research. The video was produced by the USGS Unmanned Aircraft System Project Office during training exercises at the U.S. Army’s Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah in 2010.
