Airbus Cargo Drone Challenge Gets 423 Entries

The submission period for the Airbus Cargo Drone Challenge closed on Sunday and ended up being Local Motors’ most successful co-creation endeavour in company history. The challenge received over 100 entries in the final 48 hours of the submission period to reach a total of 423.

That number surpassed the 414 entries to the BMW Urban Driving Experience Challenge in 2012, and Phase I of the Domino’s Ultimate Delivery Vehicle challenge which netted 385.

The challenge now moves into the all-important validation stage. Our team consisting of engineers Matt Jackson, Alex Palmer and Alaric Egli, along with Project Manager Maxime Lafeuille and Anchor Products Specialist Michele Abbate, will review all entries and determine if they meet all the technical requirements. The team will contact community members who submitted invalid entries and provide guidance to bring said submissions into compliance. Entrants will then have until June 5 to make the necessary revisions and resubmit their entries.

Along with being the most popular challenge in company history, the Airbus Cargo Drone Challenge greatly diversified the Local Motors community and put on full display the power of co-creation and cooperation.

“A lot of new community members with aviation experience joined and helped many of our existing automotive-minded members,” Palmer said. “Airbus engineers took to the platform right away and engaged the community at large to help them all reach their full potential. We’re looking forward to the prototyping stage later this summer.”

Once the validation period ends on June 5, voting commences and runs through June 15. The winners of all prizes, including the $50,000 first prize, will be announced shortly thereafter.
